tour of Barcelona: the impact of Gaudi and the 1992 Olympic Games |
Urban
Morphology: transects across the city collecting economic and social data
or
Impact of an Urban Renewal scheme: collection of data in zones at varying
distances from the key inner city cultural ímplants`. |
Using primary and
secondary data to present an urban model: a near-perfect combination of Burgess,
Hoyt and Mann
Follow-up investigation into the social environmental and economic impact:
why Barcelona is regarded as the world`s best example of modern urban
regeneration.

Either
Source-to-mouth (wet) river study at different stages of stream order.
Measurements of velocity, bed load, suspended load, cross-section, depth,
gradient, land use.
Or
Use of historic flood levels in assessing flash flood risks. A flood line
notch cut into a river cliff is used as a level for calculating river discharge
(using Manning n) at one site on a (normally dry) river. (Result approx
300m³/sec). Recording of gradient, cross sectional area, bed load etc.. A
housing estate is being built on the flood plain at the level of the flood line.
Mapping of flood plain land use.
Similar measurements are taken at a second site downstream where there has
been human encroachment on the river channel. Bank full is taken as the river
level. (Result: 40m³/sec). The adjoining housing estate and camp site would be
inundated given the same flood event. |
Calculation
of hydraulic radii and the investigation of the various relationships between
stream order and river efficiency.
Comparison of the two sites: discharge, channel shape, efficiency.
Calculation of inundated areas given the same discharge. Implications for flood
plain management. Use of secondary data to calculate flood return times.
Factors accounting for the increased incidence of flash flooding in the
region |

Garrotxa
Volcanic Natural Park: (1) Vulcanicity: a field investigation of the type of
volcanic activity and its relationship to the nature of the plate margin: hot
spot or destructive? (2) Rural Study: a comparison of two villages, one
experiencing depopulation, the other an increase in population. |
